So, if you're here to hang out before night falls (i.e., before it gets crowded) just to shoot pool and down some Fat Tires, it's a pretty good, mellow pool hall. The giant screen behind the bar is, I have to admit, impressive.
by Lanell Mccoo on i actually like coming here when there's no show, or before shitty bands are scheduled to perform. what? why? let me explain. cafe du nord is one of my favorite places to drink and hang out in frisco. it has history and romance written all over the place. well, apparently, cafe du nord is also one of the favorite places to drink and hang out for many, many san franciscans. so it gets quite crowded, which i hate. no, it's not you. it's me. definitely me. i have a difficult time dealing with crowd. hence i avoid cafe du nord most of the times, except when there's no show, or when i know there are shitty bands that are scheduled to perform. i mean, who wants to pay money and listen to shitty bands? not too many people. so this is why i like coming here a few hours before the shitty bands are scheduled to perform. then i can enjoy my drinks in relative silence and comfort, as i admire the beautiful victorian decor and the magnificent mahogany bar. if this bar was able to talk, i'd bet that it has some fascinating stories to tell. *sigh* for that kind of romantic atmosphere, i will gladly pay the $10 door fee. think of it as an entrance fee to the good old days of frisco... of course, i will stay and listen to shitty bands. however, if they do really suck, then i'm off to lucky 13, which is conveniently located down the block. it's a win-win situation. five stars! . ahem, this is from rolling stone. i love the way they describe cafe du nord: "located in a former speak-easy, this dark-wooded, subterranean watering hole is the perfect place to lose a few decades over a batch of martinis." *sigh* now why can't i write like that?
