I really don't like posting negative reviews; I know people in the restaurant business work very hard. I've worked in a restaurant before, so it's not hard for me to empathize with the long hours and sometimes-terrible customers. However, I have to say that this was possibly the worst restaurant experience I've ever had--even worse than cooking the just-before-closing dinner rush in a college town. I came with the gal and her family last Sunday night for Dine About Town SF. We were seated at 6:30. The service was AWFUL. It was not busy at all, but we didn't get out of there until 9:00. That's 2.5 hours for a meal in a half-empty restaurant in which it should have only taken maybe a little over an hour. Between our salad and main course, we waited at least half an hour. Between our main course and dessert, we waited at least another half hour. That's over an hour of waiting in a restaurant that was not busy. Our wait for each course grew so long that we ended up taking bets to see when they would serve our next course. We were seated at the closest table to the kitchen, but the servers kept walking right by us as we waited for them to clean our table and bring us our next course. We had to remind them to bring us our food, and once we did, they brought out the wrong entrees, so we had to remind them what we ordered. I don't know if it was the cooks or the servers who dropped the ball (or perhaps both?), but either way, it was frustrating. The food was hit-or-miss. Their oysters were quite good, and a good deal for $1. The clam chowder was also tasty--rich, plenty of clam, and something that . However, the $8 romaine salad was literally romaine leaves and cheese; I could have put together the same exact thing at Costco--for twelve people. My main entree was a frutti de mare that was forgettable. Same with the bread pudding dessert. Other than the oysters, it was overpriced. My mother-in-law ordered her steak medium-well; it came out medium rare. We sent it back, but they didn't fix it; it just came out seared more on top, but inside, it was still bright pink. Throwing the entire plate in the microwave doesn't work with steak, friends. Ditto for my father-in-law's bass. Finally: Skipping CDs as your house music? Come on, guys. The only reason I would come back is to see whether or not I'd suffer through the same experience again--but only if I had a free night, some extra cash to burn, and a long book to read. Mayes, if I do ever come back, please prove me and this review wrong.

Not the best sushi I've ever had, but definitely not the worst! I had the Dynamite roll, which was a little too spicy for my taste, but my friend had the Rainbow roll, which was slightly sweet. On a Tuesday night the place was packed, and the atmosphere has definitely gotten a much needed face lift, but it was freezing inside! I will probably go back since it is right down the street from me, but I will probably try one of the rice or noodle dishes next time.

I've only been here in the night time but have always found Sugar to be a great spot to have drinks with friends before going out dancing.  The interior is warm and sleek and the staff is friendly. Sylvia, the manager, recently helped me to host a party there and they made sure that everything ran perfectly.  I was able to get the private back room with lush leather chairs with easy access to the bar. I recommend this place the next time you want to have an event, it surprises me that some people haven't discovered it yet! Minus one star for a name that is easily confused for the Sugar lounge in Hayes Valley and for the person at the door who is attractive but knows it in that annoying way.
