After hearing so much about this place, I finally had the opportunity to go here. For starters, you can park directly across the street for $5 or you can park elsewhere, like I did, for free. I don't know the towing policy so if you get towed don't Message me. When I first walked up to the entrance, I wasn't sure if I was at the right place or not. The outside looks like a place you can bring your car for tune-ups. The cover charge to enter is only $5, a very reasonable price. This is truly an underground type of place, you literally have to walk down a cave-like entrance. There are two rooms, the main room larger than the other. In fact, you can easily walk past the other room without realizing it. The main room has its typical bar, but what set it apart to me are the seating arrangements of this place. Along the walls, corners, and nooks, are cool little bench-type chairs to sit. There are plenty of little spots to get your groove on. The price for drinks is fair, but once that place gets packed you'll only want to be drinking water. While they only take cash, they do have ATM's available. From what I've heard, the restrooms were once disturbing, but they've renovated the bathrooms. The highlight of this place is definitely the music. On this particular night, two DJ's, Jah Prince and Rasta Roots, were on the turn tables. If I could, I would have tipped these guys and give them a standing applaud. They mainly played Hip-Hop, Dancehall, and Reggae. However, it wasn't the mainstream songs that are so played out. They played cuts that instantly transported me back to my teenage and early 20's. In the smaller room, they DJ played similar music as well. I was highly amused watching people Pop-Locking...to every damn genre of music. Never have I seen anyone Pop-Lock to Reggae, I suspect if they broke out some Beethoven they would have been doing the same. Yes, they allow people to smoke. As a non-smoker, it didn't bother me because they music was THAT good. I will definitely return, especially when these DJ's are there.

I really, really wanted to like this place because so many people rave about it, but that wasn't the experience I had. I was in the area because I had attended a screening at Atlantic Station and I knew they were doing the eat like an employee promotion, so I thought it would be a good time to go try it out. My main problem was with my waiter because he kept disappearing. Normally I wouldn't care, but I had a 7 year old with me and it was getting close to bed time. I kept looking around for him to get to go boxes, drink refills etc., but he was never where I could see him. Then at the end of the meal, after I had already paid, I needed a box for my leftover half of pecan tart and I couldn't get his attention because he was standing behind the bar drinking wine, so I finally asked someone else walking by to box it for me. He also missed part of my order and didn't put in my cauliflower mac n cheese. As for the food, it was very uneven. I had the pimento cheese dip, which wasn't as good as Watershed's, and was served with celery tops (literally an inch or less of leafless stem per stalk) and very tasty cornmeal crackers and fantastically crunchy sweet pickles. I also had the cornmeal crepe with BBQ, which was ok, but the sauce was just overwhelmingly sweet and some of the meat was tough. My dining companion had a tasty grilled cheese with very stale french fries and was charged for her soda, although I thought a drink was included with her meal. As mentioned previously, I had the pecan tart which was gooey and sticky with plenty of pecans, but served with ice cream that was full of ice crystals. Would I go back? Hard to say. I find it very annoying to have to pay to park at restaurants and the service and food I had wouldn't bring me back, but maybe I just ordered wrong and went on an off night. Overall, I would have to quote Kit F and give this place a big "Meh".

One would expect that a bar taking on the name Route 101 would honor the tradition of this fantastic historic stretch of West Coast road (registered in the 20s, if I recall correctly) that takes you through so many interesting places. One would think they would have some memorabilia or photos or sense of history waiting for you when you walk in. Sadly no. This place would be better named "VH1 - I love the 80s" since it more closely memorializes mullets, couches upholstered in rec room brown patterns, kegs of beer that taste like they are relics stocked up on in that decade and Spuds McKenzie. The place is large and in addition to the couches I would highly recommend not sitting on (they look like they have been collecting spilled drinks and bodily fluid since the 80s) they have a few TVs, a few pool tables and a whole lot of people hanging out talking about the latest tragedy in their lives and how great a year 1988 was for fashion. Oh, and, so I have been told, it is pretty easy to have sex in the restrooms here so I would refrain from sitting on the toilet seats as well....they also look like they haven't been cleaned since 1982.
