My mom decided to visit me again for a day, so again I suggested while Restaurant Week was going on. Always a good move, cheaper meals at nicer places doesn't happen very often (nor does having someone else pay for YOU). Before you knew it I had booked lunch reservations at Zahav in anticipation of a day exploring Old City together. After arriving in Philly and checking out the gallery I intern at, mom and I headed over to Zahav. It was surprisingly empty (or at least felt that way - high ceilings are amazing space enhancers), but it was Thursday midday. We were seated near the windows past the bar and immediately our waitress handed us menus and directed our attention to drinks. That dealt with, we turned to the difficult task of choosing what we wanted. I always like to share, and Zahav seems like a place where sharing is encouraged since the first course is "for the table." Our meal progressed as follows: Salatim & hummus with laffa: the "for the table" dishes were really tasty - four little salads (VERY small portions, maybe because we were only two people?) of eggplant, fennel, tabouli, and okra. I didn't care for the okra, and that fennel was good but with a surprising spicy kick at the end. The laffa and hummus are to die for, the hummus is so fresh its...well, clearly the best hummus I've ever had. Roasted beets with beet green tzatziki, argan oil, fried shallots: I'm Greek, you say tzatziki and I say tzatzik-me! A small little bowl of fork tender cubes and man those greens with tzatziki were just mmmmmm...I want some now! Chraime: Moroccan fish stew with tomatoes and peppers: okay, this is a soup, not a stew. Stew implies WAY more substance. The tomato base was fantastically spiced and spicy, with chunks of white fish and peppers floating around. The Gibraltar: swordfish, charmoula, chickpeas: really tasty and also really basic (in a good way - its a safe, tasty choice). The swordfish was amazingly juicy, I'm used to the grilled, drier taste and this is so much better! The dish itself had a light curry taste. The Galil: baby eggplant, pomegranate reduction, pistachio, tehina: Whoa. This was where my tastebuds decided to panic. It was good, and clearly incorporates standard Mediterranean flavors, but all at once is too much. I couldn't handle the conglomeration of tehina and intense pomegranate reduction sauce. Konafi: kataifi, ricotta, rose water, pistachios: Sweet lord I need to either find someone in CC who makes this or find out what the recipe is because I couldn't stop eating this dessert. The ricotta especially had a wonderful subtle sweetness to it. YUM. Labaneh panna cotta: pistachio baklava, passionfruit sorbet: another really good dessert, although not entirely my thing due purely to the passionfruit sorbet. I don't like passionfruit. But that baklava was delish - too bad the piece they give is so small. My mom and I really enjoyed our lunch at Zahav - the Restaurant Week menu selections were amazing, you were guaranteed to find something that you would like. For two women it was more than enough food, but I can understand how people might be confused and possibly upset over how small the portions are - because they are small! Very similar to tapas (my fav, next to sushi that is), the 'entrees' are the same size as the 'appetizers.' But damn is that food good!! Plus, before leaving we got little goodie bags with a tehina cookie and little gift cards, one to Zahav worth $10 and another to Percy Street Barbecue for $5! Not bad at all.

I've read a lot of reviews with people complaining about paying $20 cover... doesn't everyone know that there are guestlists to get in for free?!?!? I went this past weekend with my BF and a bunch of our friends. Parked in the lot right next door and waited in line proobably a max of 20 minutes. No cover charge. Not bad. Yeah so it gets all hot and sweaty downstairs but it's like that with every club! Music was decent and at least Temple had different rooms that played different kinds of music. Temple is waaaaaaay better than 181, Loft 11, Boss etc. It has a good mix of people and not ghetto like some. Sure SF isn't THE party capital but hey, if you want to have a decent night out in the city, I would recommend this spot!

Lemme start our by saying that I'm not the biggest clubber, but  for some reason that I myself don't even understand, I love Retox. I'm not sure if its the cool picture collage on the wall or the interesting choice of music, this place is always a good time.
