This place was pretty cool when I went. However, I'm a 6th street bar n00b, so take this review with a grain of salt. I went here for a private event- Geekstravaganza 2009 (Holla Austin Browncoats!) The party itself was rockin but Buffalo Billiards wasn't too bad either. The event was held upstairs so I barely saw the downstairs except for the few minutes where I stood awkwardly in my Link costume waiting for the event to start with my boyfriend. Seemed like a good amount of stuff to do downstairs though. The upstairs area was HUGE! If there's ever anything else up there, it was cleared off for the event. The bar itself seemed to be in okay shape (lots of slightly dirty corners like someone else mentioned). I got the buffalo wings, which were AWESOME. I think they were reasonably priced too. Didn't have anything to drink here so I can't comment on that. The bartenders upstairs for the event were sort of attentive but didn't seem very talkative or.. welcoming? They mostly just talked to each other the whole time. I had a great time but I think it was mostly due to the Browncoats and not as much the bar itself. I would totally go back here for another event that I want to attend (like NERD NITE!) but not necessarily to go hang out. But I am not a bar person either so there ya go. This is definitely the place to go if you have a huge group. And, as is always the case with downtown, parking was a nightmare. I had to walk from pretty far away in said Link costume and it was a little embarrassing. haha I even had a giant fake sword.

i had promised to take my friend MG from SJ out dancing and was showing her around. after a bust party at Dirty Martini, we decided to go to Roe because a friend could get us through the line. i didn't know about the horrific experiences related to the infamous Roe Line, so i'm glad that i didn't have to pay - the experience certainly wasn't worth $20. Drinks the drinks were of typical SF prices and strength. kudos to the bartenders located upstairs who were fast and efficient. the one who waited on us gave a drink for free our drink for free because there was lipstick still on the glass from its previous use. he got points for not hesitating, but he could have just re-mixed the drink (a Kir Royale) instead of transferring it. if you want to get a drink, it's easier to get them from either the main or basement floors where it's not so busy. honestly, the upstairs is over-the-top lame because of the amount of people. Floor Layout none of the floors have a very good layout for dancing. the place is really a restaurant with music as an afterthought. all of the levels are long and narrow and the DJ station is set right in the middle instead of on an end. i'm not to sure about the upper level, there were so many people packed in the place i couldn't really see it. the upper level is a serious fire hazard. Crowd both the men and women there were attractive people, even though they certainly weren't my crowd. in the end i was appalled because many kept on walking into me while i was dancing! it happened with both men and women, even if there was plenty of room to go around me. it didn't matter if i was close to the DJ station (ie, not in the general traffic pattern), or when i was on the total edge of the room with the nearest person to me being 4 feet away -- people STILL managed to walk into me. i'm not exaggerating. that has never happened even on more crowded danced floors at Ruby Skye or Kelly's Mission Rock. i was very surprised and very miffed. Music - bad and bad the DJs that night were pretty low-budget Chris Garcia from Vegas. lame. his stuff at times was OK, but progressively started to get worse. it was really annoying when he was distracted by women coming up to give him kisses. there was a point when there were no beats for 30 seconds, just that music they use to "build" to another section and another time when the music actually stopped all because he was busy attending the ladies and getting pictures taken. very unprofessional. the basement DJ was in the right place. he didn't know his craft well. i don't mind mixing it up with mash-ups or whatever the flavor, but at least mix it well. i honestly think i could do better with my iPod jacked into the music system. Finally in the end MG and i ended up at Kelly's Mission Rock around 1:00a and left around 4:30a. we were both happy that we had finally found some good dance music, and i was thankful to be with people who knew the unwritten rules of dance-floor etiquette. remember this kids, friends don't let friends dance at Roe.

[Background: new to the city, first time to this club, and came from San Diego which I would rate 4/5 for the club scene] Surprisingly it wasn't actually as small as some people made it seem...I guess it would help to not go on a promo night. I'd say the club is as big as 2 starbucks. The club is right next to the bright and shiny Ruby Skye sign. We arrived to a short linte at 11:15 on a Saturday night and were able to get in (we met the 1 girl : 1 guy ratio standard because, well...um...our party was composed of one girl and one guy). The 3 guys in front of us were denied since they had no girls, so the 1 girl : 1 guy ratio seems to be enforced. Oh and there was NO COVER and NO GUESTLIST required (which was kind of refreshing)...I guess if you meet their akward standards to get in, you're good to go. Environment was not too bad, but generally the crowd was a lot of the 'drunken white girl' scene. The setup seemed cool, although the bottle service table area took up about 1/2 the club yet was generally 1/2 used (i.e. waste of space in an already smallish club). Music was pretty good..mostly hip hop and the DJ that night was really into mashups. However, after 12:30 the DJ decided to start mashing up new hip hop with the inevitable slew of 80's journey/queen hits, which kind of killed the flow of things (but probably quenched the thirst of many of the aforementioned 'drunken white girls'). Most of the mashups played only a a verse and a chorus of the good hip hop songs before the next transition. However, for some reason, the DJ found it very necessary to play, in its entirety, MC Hammer's 'Can't Touch This' from his 1990 hit album 'Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em'...didn't get the signficance of this, but perhaps its deeper symbolism eludes me. Overall, I was pleased. Definitely seemed like a decent basic hip hop club to go for a good time. I'd recommend at least a one time visit for those with a decent number of girls in the crew on a non-promo night.
