by Herbert Y. on Went to the Box for a bachelor party--granted 6 guys is going to be girl kyptonite as far as the bouncers are concerned, but we had a confirmed reservation, not including a requsite 2 bottles of alcohol cover. They knew we were a group of 6 guys and if they had aproblem with that, I wish they had mentioned something a lot earlier. When we arrived, we were promptly turned away despite having the reservation. Typical hot spot BS and were only let in after bribing the manager and paying for more alcohol than we cared for. Show was interesting, but dealing with the BS just left a unpleasant taste in my mouth. Certainly a great place for those motivated status seekers, but others should simply be wary.
by Anna Wiedman on I had high expectations for the co-ed/uni-sex bathrooms, so I was slightly disappointed by what I found. Cramped, designated stalls. The stairs are also dangerous. Watch your step! Considering those and all the other expectations that I had for Vessel [based on reviews read and my general impression of clubs], I actually had a good time and would possibly return with the right company and right music. There's room to dance and to breathe. - Free coat check as you step in! - It's okay to dance on tables. I didn't hit the ceiling! - There's a tree to dance around if you're the tree-hugging type. - 2 for 1 drinks before a certain time. I was shamelessly double-fisting before 11pm. - Get on a guest list because $20 is way too much! - Good parking on a random week night. Haven't been on weekends yet. Best of all, security is awesome. As I was leaving, they stepped in to help me avoid a potentially awkward situation of deciding whether I had it in me to give out a fake email or phone number to the friends of someone who didn't have the balls to just ask. Thanks!
by jenn h. h. on This is definitely my favorite music venue / bar in all of Philadelphia, bar none! I don't live anywhere near here, but it feels like my neighborhood place. I want to move to fishtown so I can walk here! The food is good (what I've had so far), the beer also, and the musical venue upstairs has unbelievable acoustics. It's intimate and can accommodate a variety of different acts. They don't blow out your eardrums either, so you can actually still hear when you go home. There's al fresco dining, and I'm a fan of most places with outdoor dining. It's a totally comfortable place, welcoming of all people. It might seem to cater to hipsters, but really, a nerd like me can even have fun there.
