WTF. I hate when a place is rated really high on rateclubs and I get really excited to go there only to be let down!  My boyfriend took me here for my birthday dinner because I had mentioned to him that it would be fun to go there sometime.  I ordered the sashimi as my first course and it was realllly dry!  My boyfriend's ahi burgers were pretty good though so I didn't mind.  When our main entrees came however (I ordered the lamb and he ordered the filet mignon), I started to get really pissed.  His filet mignon was COLD, as if it has been in the fridge for a while.  It was tasteless and actually kind of gross! My lamb tasted like something from Panda Express..although I don't want to insult Panda by comparing it to this place. In addition to sucky food, the service was SOOOO ridiculously rude.  Our bartender/waiter was personable and nice to the couple sitting directly next us and asked them a bunch of questions.  However, when he would talk to us, he would just mutter "How's the food?" or "Want anything to drink?" It was as if his best friends were there and he just wanted to ignore us the whole night.  There was a ridiculous disparity between the way he treated the couple and how he treated us.  To me, it's fine if service is so-so for EVERYBODY since it's such a busy place but the difference in his demeanor towards us was really unprofessional. It's really hard to enjoy the show when your food sucks and your waiter isn't very hospitable.  I'm really disappointed in this place.

watched Leela James perform here as part of my bday celebration with hubby.  I'm reviewing the service not the performance.  I've been to Yoshi's in Oakland so I kinda know what to expect from here. I bought tickets online and reserved seats so it was a breeze for us when we came in 5 mins before the show started. The outside part of the place is not as clean. I'm not sure how long it took for our server to attend to us.  I ordered coconut mojito while hubby ordered his usual Jack n coke and a beer. The drinks were okay...not too fancy. The service is forgettable. If you really want to see the singer/band perform here go for it. Maybe next time, we'll try to eat dinner here.  I know the food in Oakland was great.

I came here back in October for a Steve Angello concert. Avalon is a huge, converted theater, with a dance floor and stage on the first floor, and seating on the second floor. Dancing to electronica was super fun, and I definitely appreciated how the event did not end until 8am (not that we stayed that long)! Being a night owl, I HATE it when clubs close before 2am. There were cons though: the bathroom line was ridiculously long, the drinks were expensive ($8/shot), and I had to resort to creative means to get water (Door-in-face technique of persuasion). I asked the bartenderess for a large request (water) first, which she refused, and then for a smaller request (ice), at which point she conceded, quite enthusiastically. I also found out what Asian parents do for fun, at least in LA. That night, the venue was swarmed with middle-aged Asians dolled up like twenty year olds, dancing in awkward ways. They looked like they were having lots of fun though, so I approved. I never knew that Asians liked electronica until now though...and it made me kind of glad my parents don't live in LA. Besides that, there were a couple other interesting characters, like this flaming-as-a-flamingo guy who wiggled his bum in the aisles by the seating, stopping periodically to let people through with a flourish, and took pictures of random people, then showed them proudly what he had done. There was also this pervy young Asian dude who kept creeping up and trying to get his boner to brush against my hand as I was dancing with my friend. CREEPER ALERT.
