I came to Philadelphia for a conference and my #1 goal was to eat as many cheesesteaks as possible during my time here. I didn't get to eat nearly as many as I wanted to, but there is only so much you can do in a weekend. If I were going by reviews alone, I probably wouldn't have done Pat's and Geno's, as they seem to be rated rather low by locals,  but since I had limited time, I decided to do the tourist thing and see what these two were all about anyway. I can't say I regret it, as the walk down 9th St and through the Italian Market was well worth the journey. We came upon Geno's first, and luckily we missed the rush and it wasn't too crowded. We got a cheesesteak with onions and provalone. The first thing we noticed was the bun and how nice and soft it was. The sandwich itself was pretty simple and no-nonsense. It came across as pretty plain, but overall we thought it was fine. The English-only rhetoric and strong law enforcement presence could be mildly offensive, but I just chalked it up to "character." It was pretty over the top, though. Compared to Pat's, there was more room to sit and it came across as slightly cleaner and better organized. The absolute best thing, though, was they had BOTH a Coke machine AND a Pepsi machine. That way everybody's happy, and I get my Diet Coke! Between the two, though, I thought Pat's was better. Coming from an ex-burnt-out party kid who has since recovered and only really goes out specifically to find good music, the Sullivan Room is one of the few places that has brought me out multiple times.  I was born and raised in the Midwest where there's a strong affinity toward Techno (Detroit), House (Chicago), and any hybrid of the two.  The Sullivan Room keeps it tight with stream of top notch (not pop or mainstream) electronic artists.  The dancefloor is pretty large and is usually busy enough to make you want to dance but roomy enough so that you're not stuck with your elbows glued to your ribs.  There's usually a cover (check their website), but the lines aren't too long.  Also, if it's before midnight, the place may be kind of dead.  And to top it off, it's right by the subway making for an easy drunken walk and ride back home.

super swanky. This place reminds me of a REAL bar, a nyc bar. High ceilings and minimalistic modern decor, it looks like a nyc hot spot, but it's right on Mass Ave in Cambridge near MIT. They have special drinks (my favorite is the very euro Demi Peche, half beer half peach juice) and they have cute little posh aps to eat. When DJ Kon is spinning it's great old school funk but get there early-- 1, because it can be free, and 2, because it gets so packed that you'll be forced to stand up or dance alllll nite (without being able to steal one of their mod moveable seats). So, go early, then quit while your ahead... like by 11pm. And if you are bold enough to show up after 10pm, be prepared to wait in the freezing cold in a line outside for at least half an hour... and i mean at least.
