When Texas Monthly ranks burgers, I'm always curious. I have not always agreed with their rankings. Yesterday a friend suggested that we try the Chop House Burger, and said he was pleasantly surprised when he had it the first time. This is an odd space, dark, swanky, upscale sports bar, that is nicely appointed but still the, atmosphere left me confused as to what their goal was. Upscale restaurant? Kind of. Sports Bar? OK. Oh well, this review is of the Chop House Burger and it was great. The beef tasted very high quality, the bun was soft, not sweet and not overly bready. The burger was a good size to handle and held together well without getting soggy. The French Fries were pretty great too. All in all, a wonderful burger and I won't regret those calories for the experience. Update: Had the Allendale salad yesterday. It was as solid as the burger.

A visual treat for the eyes, this place is like Dia de los Muertos on steriods.  Loved the Mexican Martini, laced with chopped up jalapenos.  It has a real kick to balance out the sweetness of the margarita mix (yes, it's a margarita in a martini glass).  I wasn't about to up the spiciness ante with their "habanero" version. Got our table, lucky for us the waiter only moved us two feet from our bar stools to the table right next to the bar. Funny thing, too, the table was empty the whole time we were enjoying our drinks yet the maitre'd said he couldn't seat us.   Gotta love Hollywood! Chips were really good.  They came with refried beans (good) and a mild and spicy salsa (both good but both mild).  The tamales they raved about were BAD, way too salty and less memorable than ones I've had for a fraction of the price  from ladies in East LA, North Hollywood, outside USC County General, sold from random people in cars all over LA... heck even the Tommy's tamale is on par with this one.   The mexican rice was pretty good at least. So yea, I don't know why I keep going to design-first, food-second Mexican restaurants, call me "stupido".

We ate at The Kress last night. We are fortunate that our son works for The Kress and we were part of the friends and family invited to the soft opening. The restaurant is beautiful with all  the reds and blacks and beautiful lighting. Our appetizers were not only great but the presentation was superb (see pictures). The lobster filled, Kobe beef rolls from the Sushi bar were a delight! The Bentu Box was filled with small portions of a cream cheese stuffed scallop, beef rib over shitake mushroom puffs with a side of ginger chutney, coconut shrimp served in a full half coconut, lobster cake (I could have eaten ten of these!), and fried straws with havarti cheese over mango coleslaw.  Sooooooo good! We also had the hot rocks shrimp served on a tray of gravel with a large river rock heated so hot it cooks the skewered shrimp. The salad..... heirloom tomato, Buratta mozzarella and fresh basil stacked with an added tomato gelee was delicious. For entrees we had white fish, halibut, tandoori chicken and tenderloin of beef.  Wonderful.....as was the wine and the chocolate fountain we had for dessert. Can't wait to go back and try more of Chef Troy Thompson's many creations.
