watched the US-Ghana world cup match here so maybe the frenzy and excitement of that afternoon tainted my impression of the place. but it seems to me a perfectly good place to sit on a hot summer day and drink. and i really hope the guy wearing the American flag as a cape is a regular and wasn't just there for the soccer.

After reviewing La Caverna, how could I not review this place? For a short summer stint, I ended up here every other weekend. Guess you can call me mundane. Definitely very "Asian-centric" so for guys, if you have yellow fever you know the go to spot. No cover which is a plus in MePa. Strict door policy of 1:1 ratio of guys to girls. Also semi strict on dress code, they wouldn't let my friend in with dark sneakers yet when I went in, I saw people with white Converse... This place is very spacious, two floors nice decor although aging. Food is alright as well, but prepare to wait a long time to be served. Here's a trick, instead of waiting at the overcrowded bar upstairs, just get your drink downstairs and bring it up! The bartenders are much nicer on the first floor anyway.

Ah, so much potential, wasted. Kelly's is a nicely laid out, multi-level venue that looks out over the water. Years ago I went to some amazing events there, but nowadays it's largely a haven for the 94.9 and KMEL radio-centric crowd. The crowd there is just a little less interesting and a little more meat-head than what I prefer. Their big event is the house music-focused summer monthly Second Sunday, which has a rich history but doesn't have the same pull or cache it used to, though it still features classic big names like Derrick Carter and Doc Martin, and when the sun is shining it can be nice to dance outside. One interesting side note is the constant issues the management has with the police. They've been threatened with having their noise permit yanked more than once, and while it may have something to do with SFPD's shady 'off-duty officer security guard' requirements, they've also had a few unfortunate incidents with fights inside and outside the venue. Not one of my preferred spots.
