by Amy S. on The SF club scene is pretty foreign to me now that I live in NYC. We decided on Temple because I wanted to go clubbing and a couple friends were already planning on going so my girls and I tagged along. PRO: It's super easy to get on the guestlist. Just go online and sign up. CON: You must get in before 11PM to avoid the $20 cover. PRO: Cool decor on the main floor; high ceilings with great mood lighting and a huge Buddha statue in the front. CON: That decor doesn't extend to downstairs (hip hop room) which is where we spent most of our time. PRO: The drinks are on the inexpensive side. (but keep in mind NYC clubs may have skewed my perception on this one.) CON: The drinks are on the weak side. PRO: Temple had a great mixed crowd the night we went. CON: No con on this one! The diverse crowd was my favorite thing about Temple. PRO: There are 3 different rooms for dancing: 2 house/trance rooms, 1 hip hop room. We were in the hip hop room for most of the time and the music was decent. CON: I can't speak for the house rooms, but the hip hop room has little to no ventilation so it got ridiculously hot as the room filled up with people. Also, I wasn't a fan of the 80s segments in the mix. Overall, I had a fun time at Temple. Then again I can have a good time anywhere as long as I'm with my girls, I don't have to pay cover, and there's good music for dancing. BUT I can see how Temple can be hit or miss depending on which night you go, so proceed with caution.
by Hideki K. on "I'm (Drinking) on a Boat!" The Frying Pan has to be the best place to have drinks in NYC. I'm late in discovering it (didn't miss the boat though, har har), and is now my favorite bar. It's located right on the Hudson River, so you can enjoy the breeze and the sun. The Hudson no longer smells like it used to. There are lots of nice nooks and crannies to sit at (you can climb ladders, go down the into the galley of tugboats, or be on the top level of a floating barge. The drinks are cheap, there's no dress code, there's no cover charge, they allow dogs, there's music (dancing inside one of the tugboats), open bonfires, and they serve food! WOW. As for the food, the clams and crabcake is good. They even serve lobsters. The prices come out to even amounts after tax is added, which is great and how prices should be everywhere. It's also a Salad Bowl friendly venue!
