Avalon is a converted theatre turned nightclub. In the past years it has been one of the premier venue for house and trance DJs in Hollywood. The crowd enters into a generous foyer with clear access to the main dance floor and the upper mezzanine.  The seating area above is furnished with a mix of bleachers and sofa seats and offers an ideal retreat from the more crowded areas below.  Be sure to pick up drinks early upon arrival as the two main bars on by the dance floor become extremely busy as night progresses. Ad hoc bars positioned at the dancefloor's flanks as well as the upstair landing offer some relief, though their drink selections are limited; Gatorade and other energy drinks are also on offer there as well. The security staff is courteous and professional.  Be sure to join the correct entry line outside the theater; remember that the will-call ticket holder line is to the right of the box office against the wall; general admission is also on that side and parallel to the will-call line. Be prepared to pay up to $30 per head or over for general admission.

It's nice to know that Martuni's is still thriving. Quite by chance I was able to jump in for a couple of cocktails with a friend for the habitual Friday afternoon "tie one (or two) on" session. I hadn't been in about 10 years and I think there was even a drag show or something back then. The place looks great and I was happy to see they knew how to make a proper sidecar in frothy sugar-rimmed glory. The back room was boisterous and dark with patrons taking their turn as singing accompanist to the piano player. The crowd seemed to be a nice mix of gay/strait, locals/out-of-towners, young/old, and of various race, color, and creed, all happily meshing in cocktail loving oneness.

This is the first time I feel compelled to write a review just as I got home. We went to this place with a 16 people party and had a really bad experience. The waitress didn't seem to know what she was doing and took forever to get our drinks since "THE RAN OUT OF GLASSES!" they said there were a couple of big parties and used all the glasses... we thought it was a joke at first but after ordering water 5 times we kept getting the same excuse. Afterwards, the food came some plates were cold, 2 arrived when everyone else had finished; we also brought our own birthday cake and were told we were going to be charged $3 per person for a cutting fee since we were using their spoons and plates... Unbelievable!!! We finally spoke to the manager and she waived the cake cutting fee.. they didn't cut anyway and didn't even bring a proper knife for us to do so. At least, some of the food was good and the decor and inside is really nice. The place looks like a million bucks but treats the customers like it's charity. After a really not deserved $98 tip, we felt completely robbed and the experience in general was not good at all. The bottom line is: Luckie Food Lounge is a pretty building to look at but save your money, the food is overpriced and the service is beyond awful; do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs.
