Allow me to focus on 2 things that haven't really been covered in previous reviews. First the neighborhood. Few know that the cutting edge of the sexy avant-garde art scene in LA has hopped the tracks past Union Station and emanated from Little Tokyo like a wild meadow blooms after a fire. Every warehouse, nook, cranny and alleyway is being transformed right under your nose into something Parisian in sense and formative in theme. It is new and wonderful and the whole movement feels like love in the springtime! The streets really have a whole movie-lot feel to them, almost surreal, but at the same time quite safe. Parking is easy and free. I recommend the streets south of the venue. There are small theaters and working artists smattered about, so one should always find little groups out on the walk. Everything is well-lit. The other thing that impressed me--and at 50 I'm either too old for a venue like this or I've seen it all, sonny!--was the crowd itself. I am a pushover for anything live or out of the ordinary. ShortStuff and I regularly haunt anything from ultra-small theaters in WeHo to coffee shops in Santa Ana just to catch something organic and fresh. Venues are, to me, the shell of the egg. Intimate or cavernous, if I'm not feeling the crowd, the rest is mere wrapping paper. But this crowd had a unique and powerful energy. Not quite age-specific, sans dress-code which could be identified, this group was there for a good time as a GROUP. No random drunk-ass bumping, no groping in the dark, no idiots trying to hijack the stage; what transformed as the night went on was a group of people intent on enjoying the show and the evening. Since this is my first time--and the folks were either there for the euro-trance DJ'd dance music or the abbreviated but enjoyable Burlesque show--I can't say how the crowd would be on a live-band set or sans burlesque, but for tonight at least, they were not only on their best behavior, but the synergy the group co-created was exquisite.

This place is tucked in an alleyway near Cypress St Pint and Plate, and across from The Biltmore.  You totally wouldn't notice it at all if it weren't for the door people there. Inside, I can most aptly describe this place as a NYC-type lounge.  It's got two levels, but not enough space for anyone to really do any dancing.  But even if there was space, I doubt any dancing would go on as this isn't that type of crowd.  The crowd is more see-and-be-seen, girls in cocktail dresses and men dressed sharply. The bartenders are so-so... they do the best they can with the crazy business there, and they are somewhat friendly but I can't say I'm either wowed or unhappy with them. The decor is definitely nice, it's very dimly lit and a lot of neon lights and such.  Might hide the wrinkles on some of the older patrons here. Overall, it's a nice place to go to if you want to dress up and have a drink but don't feel the energy of clubbing.  It's a prototypical lounge with typical lounge prices, service, and people.

This is my favorite place to see live music in Philadelphia. Sure, the sound may be lacking and may occasionally sound muffled and just plain jacked up. But you couldn't ask for a better, more intimate atmosphere to see some of your favorite bands in. I went to the Wire show last night and I wouldn't have chosen to see that band any other way. It was true perfection. Before the show, my fiance and I grabbed dinner downstairs and I will dream about the eggplant sandwich that I ordered until we meet again. Also, our waitress, a petite girl with short-shorts that take a large amount of self-esteem and don't-give-a-crap-about what-other-people-think attitude was very friendly and as quick as lightning. I will go back to Johnny Brenda's time and time again, regardless of the sometimes-lackluster acoustics.
