Lucky for us, Jimmy won a raffle for a free weekend at the W Downtown. Since my frugal genes would never let me pay the prices that they charge for this place, particularly when coupled with my pragmatic taste, the only way we'd ever check out this place was under such circumstances. But it was nice when flying in from out of town to just check in next door, rather than waiting for Jimmy to be done with work by sitting at an open cubicle and doing more work. The room was pretty, but not terribly functional. So much space was devoted to the modern bathroom, that the area with the bed seemed somewhat cramped, rather than cozy. The modern shower is just glass wall, with only part of it being privacy glass. Thankfully the toilet gets its own room with closed door. However, if you forgot to deadbolt the door, and the cleaners came in while you were in the shower, there's no way they wouldn't see the full monty. There are lots of artsy touches - a decorative but not powerful lamp, artistic pieces on the walls, decorative pillow and throw on the bed. But the chaise is only a foot away from the bed... seems to me they could've taken some of the shower space to make the bedroom seem less cramped. We got some great time by the pool, which is on the 16th floor, offering good views of downtown and Centennial Park. Even though the pool is tucked under the majority of the building, there's always part of it that was exposed to full sun. The lounge chairs are modern and the bar is only a few steps away, since you have to walk through it to get to the pool. The workout room is nice as well, with multiple treadmills and ellipticals overlooking the curve in the connector, and several weight machines as well. Check in was friendly and easy. We were slightly disappointed when we asked during check-in if BLT was open for brunch the following day and were told simply no, since we'd wanted to try it as part of the weekend experience. However, the in-room menus indicated that BLT did serve breakfast, so I checked the hours on my phone, and sure enough it said not open Saturday and Sunday. Confused, but trusting, we opted to try several places downtown that we haven't gotten around to now that we live further north. When we came back after an awesome dinner at Agave, BLT steak was packed. So we asked the hotel staff again when they opened on Sunday, and we were told 6:30. Oh, dinner only. Then saw on 4square the next morning, as we waited in line for Mother's Day brunch at Murphy's that one of my friends had checked in there that morning... to make a long story short, I was disappointed at the uninformed hotel staff who didn't even seem to want to get the right information or recommend anything in the area instead. I expect a place like this to be more than just a pretty face, but it seems to me that's just what it is. Especially if you like purple.

I don't like bars, I don't like clubs, but I love Bordello. I've had the honor to play onstage here and having been to a few shows here as well I love this place. Great atmosphere, retro feel to everything, full bar, lounge area, great acoustics, devil heads on the wall, booths, sleazy decorations, great people, such a great place to just get dressed up, have drinks with friends, enjoy some music, a show and maybe even a band or two. The main reason I keep coming back is Haunted House Au Go Go, where for a night every few months the place turns into my favorite place in the world: Live Garage/Surf bands, spooky 60's DJ's pumping away obscure fuzzy and psychedelic dance music, while a burlesque act performs and non stop go go dancers. If you want to "club" to top 40, hip hop and junk like that, take it somewhere else, this is where you go to have a real good time. I really wish this place had an online calendar of events somewhere.
