When I first heard about the prices for this place, I walked in exxpecting to pay a huge amount of money. But it turns out that you get what you pay for-it was a great experiene! I wouldn't call it "overpriced", because  that would mean the service you get doesn't match the price tag. The staff was really friendly- it was packed that night, and even though me and my friend didn't have a reservation, the hostess seated us in a matter of seconds. Drinks were supurb-strong and generous. We didn't get appetizers, but I got the salmon for an entree and that was delicious. Service was quick, but the absolute best thing was the atmosephere- a huge buddha in the center of the restaurant, dim lighting, great music made it a perfect evening. The only reason i gave it 4/5 was because of our waiter-he was a little awkward. Definetley try this place, at least once!

Me and The Piegon went this past Saturday around 4 in the afternoon. It was a good thing we got there when we did, because around 20 minutes after we were seated the rather small wait turned into a real Charlie-Foxtrot. There were 40 people lined up along the small front waiting area of the joint shooting daggers at those that were already sitting and enjoying their food. The looks were those of desperation and hunger, coupled with a few who looked like they were dragged there by their wives and girlfriends because it's new and cool and would rather have said screw it and headed to Neuvo Laredo just around the corner. The Piegon got the Butcher's Cut and I got the Flip Burger; we split the Onion rings. The burgers were exceptional and I liked the fact that they were not too big (5.5 oz), because when I left I didn't feel like throwing up or taking a diabetic nap like I do when I eat at George's or the Vortex. We actually had enough energy to head over to IKEA and pickup some picture frames. Speaking of IKEA, the join totally looks like it was furnished by the Swedish furniture giant. The white walls and modern red plastic chairs look like something from A Clockwork Orange. We split the Nutella and burnt marshmellow shake, it was O.K, nothing to slap family members about. Overall the experience and burgers were good and we will certainly head back over to Howell Mill Rd to eat there again.

there are a lot of reasons to go to cafe cocomo: - great salsa venue on thursday nights: for $10-$15 (depending on the band), you get a lesson, a DJ set, and a live band. quite a bargain. - the chance to practice your salsa dancing: as a white girl with questionable rhythm, i will take every chance i get to shake it till the wee hours in a low pressure environment.  if you really just want to dance, and accept most invitations that come your way, you will dance with people who are sweatier than you might hope; people who are several inches shorter than you and have to really reach to clear your head on the turns; people who don't understand that you don't want to feel their entire body pressed against yours for 4 minutes or so (see above re: the sweat); and a variety of other people you would probably avoid in your daily life.  however, at cocomo, you hope that you might learn a new move from them and sigh in relief when they graciously thank you for the dance at the end of the song and go about their merry way.  at the worst, you have acquired sweat from a stranger or have had your toes mangled a bit.  in the good cases, you learned a new turn or worked on your footwork.  it's worth the risk. - a fascinating and constantly-evolving space: seriously.  every time i go to cocomo, i discover that they have completely remodeled part of the (very large) club, added a new element to the decor (anyone else remember the strange stuffed animal diorama that use to be perched over the dance floor?), moved one of the bars, etc.  i love that. - some of the best people watching out there: i love the crowd.  i especially love the "salsa royalty" who come out each week.  all ages, races, body types, etc, but all amazing dancers given respect on the dance floor for their talent.  get a spot on the stairwell overlooking the dance floor and watch them go.  some of the outfits are unbelievable. on the flip side: - sketchy neighborhood: park as close as you can to the club.  get there early to get good parking.  it's worth it. - it gets hot: which could be good or bad, i guess - you have to be into salsa or really into watching other people salsa dance: give it a try at least!  it might take a few lessons to really get it. - the lessons aren't the greatest;  definitely good to learn the basics, but once you have gone a few times, the lessons are really focused on the leaders.  as a girl, you can pick up most of the moves from obliging partners once the lesson has ended. all in all, it's a very strange experience because of the setting, the people, and the location.  it's also socially very strange in that most of the girls stand around the edges of the dancefloor waiting to be invited to dance by the men.  you don't experience this kind of interaction very often these days. but i mean that mostly as "strange in a good way."
