by Emily B. on Going to the Nuyorican Poets cafe is an amazing experience. We went to a 10:00 show on a friday night and listening to the poets was like being on an emotional rollercoaster. We had to wait in line for almost two hours to make sure we could get seats, but as a small group we were able to take shifts waiting in line as others walked around and got coffee. Its true that the cafe gets really crowded, the staff is a little rude, and the bathrooms are disgusting. But, I think that's all part of the experience and I wouldn't expect it to change.
by Moses Mannion on I came here for my sister's friend's birthday and coming from the front, I was expecting an ugly, cramped bar. However, as soon as you walk in, it is already much bigger and nicer than I thought. Apparently, there is this whole dining area that looks like it's outside but it's inside (whew, stay away from the cold!) They have really pretty lighting and scenery. I think they did a great job with the outdoor-wannabe decor! The dancing is upstairs and starts at midnight. For a Friday night, it wasn't very crowded but there was enough people there so that it wasn't terribly sad. I asked for a lychee martini and it was really good! However, I'm not much of a drinker so I'm not the best judge of good alcohol. I didn't really like the music that they were playing, but I headed out early and no one was really dancing. I can imagine it being very cramped and hip, but I didn't get to see that part. Perhaps I'll go back one day! I did like how there was no cover =)
