Went here for a friend's birthday last Saturday.  Went to the downstairs area, called "Parlour" which has its own separate entrance in the rear.  It was full on Russian night, with some people we know DJing and the crowd probably 90% Russian.  No cover, and a $10 parking lot right across the street.  It was a fun time with awesome music, but it is a tiny packed area downstairs with almost no room to move around.  Felt like I was pushing past people all night.  We ended up staying only about an hour because of this.  Went upstairs and it was a hiphop night, not really our scene so we went back down to squeeze through the crowds some more.  Big plus - a Kettle One & tonic was only $8.  Aight, but probably won't be back unless going there for friends.

I kept hearing The Box coming up as this sultry, unforgettable experience, so one night my sister and I went with some friends who had the hookup to check it out. As far as the decorum goes, it was a pretty cute space...not mind boggling, but I appreciate the bordello influence, velvet curtains, and wrap around balcony. What this place had in decor it seemed to lack in direct proportion as far as the crowd went. Chhhheeeesssyyyyy . NYU in the house! New Jersey in the house! Long Island in the house! It was a fuckin frat party. Obnoxious noisy people in $300 jeans with spray on tans. Gross. And guess what? The music was all of their favorite top 40 jams! Which made them louder. And more obnoxious... But I was not there for the crowd, no...I was there for the show, and quite relieved was I when the lights finally went low, and a momentary hush seemed to fall over the room. Now I am fairly well versed in burlesque, stripping, the circus and things of the like, and while there were some gleaming moments, (Raven O naked with a cock ring and devil horns on dolo) for the most part the show was really disappointing. The female dancers we're poorly styled, (as were the cocktail waitresses) and the choreography was unexpressive and cliche. The dancers were completely forgettable, and seemed more interested in trite shock value than in the tease. (As exemplified by a boring stunt where a gal dancer in army fatigues by Leg Avenue simulates fucking Bush and Cheney. Or was it Obama? Can't remember. That's the point). There was one really incredible performer in the set though, who deserves 5 stars on her own. I've seen her one other time at the Zipper Club as part of a burlesque review, but I can't remember this bitches name. She is ethereal, and sings in the most haunting falsetto . Her style is an extension of her art, not in competition of it or overcompensating for it, which shows her multidimensionality and rounded awareness of the stage. (I will update this when I figure out her name...) I never understand places that drop all of this dough into creating an interesting space, only to confuse it's identity with generic music, cliche shows, and an embarrassingly tacky crowd. Unless you're impressed by that sort of thing, Box sucks.

When I go home to NY and am out 'n about with friends and we're just looking for a simple, comfortable place with reliable music to crazy-dance to and drinks to sip on, the whining and complaining about how we just want to go to msex begins. now. RIGHT NOW! It's the perfect default bar AND go-to bar. Don't think I've been here and NOT have a good time. Sometimes it's frickin PACKED and SWEATY and the bathroom line is so long you almost pee your pants, but sometimes it's scattered and people are responsibly sitting on flat, rolley benches listening to DJ ____, watching a japanese zombie movie or peewee herman on the big screen, and making commentary in their indoor voices. Regardless.. i kind of heart this place.
