by Lien Scinto on Went New Years 2007, had a great time. I didn't realize how early you have to get there to get a table inside. Our group was standing around all evening, in tall heels - ouch! Loved reading about the history of this place and it's nice to see it has been preserved.
by Long Duk D. on I've been to Roe a couple of times for special events, like a Mixed Elements party and such. The decor there is cool but the drinks are so-so, at times watered down. The menu there is interesting though I have never tried it and probably never will, which brings me to my complaint! I thought the venue was pretty cool so I tried to book reservations at the restaurant for a somewhat large group, about 16 people, for dinner. After speaking with the person responsible for booking "large" groups he emailed me a prix fixe to review. He and I spoke a few more times on the phone and I emailed him back to confirm our menu but I never heard back from him so I called him on his cell phone and he said that he received my email but was busy but I was all set with my reservations and he would email me back soon. Days before the scheduled day of the dinner I called back to confirm that we were still on since I never received his email (still!!) and the guy casually said something along the lines of, "Oh, sorry, we have ended up booking a private event for the night(!)." What a friggin' jerk! It would have been nice if he had proactively informed me of the change in plans on his end. What if I had not called in? Not to mention that he verbally told me on the phone that we were confirmed and a go! Not only was such a move, in my opinion, unethical and classless but it left me scrambling to find an alternate venue for my dinner party. Fortunately, I was able to find an alternate venue on such short notice (Ponzu Restaurant), and the alternate venue had excellent food and service. It turns out that the jerk that I was dealing with was one of the owners! The guy is totally unprofessional, irresponsible, aloof, and nonchalant. My experience with him has totally put me off on the place and I will never step foot in there again. There are just way too many similar restaurants (Roy's, Chaya, Ozumo, Sake Lab) in SF to bother with Roe.
