I love going to gay bars about as much as I love getting a root canal. Still, when Empress Kathleen says you're going out, you don't say no. It's pretty much guaranteed to be a good time. Add in a little David K (who seems to pretty much know every last gay in town), and Blake's entertainment value goes from decent to uproarious. Although one typically goes for the heavily-sauced beverages served in wimpy plastic cups* to get into the mood, I opted for some more low-key beer. I shoulda figured... it's a gay bar. They offer a selection of bottled "lite" everything. Ew. So... Corona it was! But, really... quality of booze products isn't the draw here, anyway. I'm pretty sure I've never witnessed a live drag show that parallels this one, orchestrated by a masterful maestroette. Between jiggly obese performers, acrobatic back walkovers, and even one performer with a set of true double-X chromosomes, this drag performance throws in the kitchen sink. A scene without excessive judgment, reasonably-priced beer, and an eyeful of men that look convincingly like women -- all this with friends on a Thursday night. Not much beats that. P.S. To the sketchy guy who totally ground up against me while I was navigating the crowd back to my people after using the loo... not cute, and not flattering. If I wanted a little play from you, I'd have let you known. Kthnxbai. ----- * Again, unless you're David K and somehow manage to finagle real glassware out of the bartenders.

Ah, Great American Music Hall. My first time here, I played a Battle of the Bands with my band in high school (too bad watching the VHS a few years later made me realize how god-awful we were). I went here again fairly recently to see NOFX play, and it was great! The venue has a small, intimate atmosphere - it's bigger than Bottom of the Hill but smaller than The Fillmore. There's also a balcony level to avoid potential mosh pits and standing up on the first level floor area. It's definitely a great place to watch a show.

I decided to stop by Cover 3 after work for a beer. Walking up I was thinking that being a sports bar they'd probably have some good wings. It was surprisingly busy. Apparently it's the same people that run ZTejas so they got the word out to all their regulars to have a packed opening night. Given that background it makes a lot of sense. It feels a lot like a ZTejas, but with TV's everywhere -- even right in your face just above the urinals. After I ordered my beer I asked to look at a food menu. I could have sworn their website said they "weren't pretentious" but I didn't get that impression looking over their menu with prices sans decimal places and appetizers starting at $11. I ordered the "beef slider" which was like 3 white castle's and fries. I got that for a steal at $16. I wasn't very impressed with the food I had and was very disappointed there's this place billing themselves as a sports bar yet they don't even serve wings. It also seemed counter intuitive their wine selection was 10 times more comprehensive than their draft beers. Luckily though I didn't get there any earlier. They guy next to me was telling my how their POS system had been down for 30 minutes before my arrival and people were stuck unnecessarily waiting around for their checks. If you were going to go, go opening weekend. They were in the mood of giving everyone free stuff for opening night. I was offered a second beer on the house. The people next to me got hooked up with their $11 chips & queso. That being said their wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I suppose if you're looking for a pretentious, fairly pricey place that has valet parking to eat then this may be up your alley. However if you're looking for the type of place you think of when you think "sports bar" run far, far away.
