by Jeremy D. on On my last night living in Boston- I knew this is the place where I wanted to go! Weekend nights it turns into a rollicking good time. It's a pretty small place and the main floor gets cleared of tables and becomes a crowded dance floor with all sorts of music- usually a mix of new stuff and some random fun music thrown in from the 80s and 90s. On the side of the bar there is a bench built into the wall and you'll often find some people standing on there dancing too- but The Phoenix Landing doesn't have that "club" atmosphere at all, which I'd say is a bonus. The bartenders are all very cool and the prices are decent. The crowd is usually pretty cool (typically younger, single) and just looking to have fun. I'd say (particularly if you're in your 20s) a visit to Central Square would be incomplete without stopping here (and maybe having a little too much to drink).
by Neil S. on I'll be honest, this place isn't my scene, but a friend was having a birthday bash there on a Sunday afternoon, so I got a chance to check it out. We spent the whole time on the back patio in the warm sunshine, and this was actually very pleasant. The place was pretty quiet and there was plenty of seating. It got me to wondering whether I'd pay a $15 cover at Zeitgeist to make the place less packed on a sunny weekend afternoon... Inside, it was quite unpleasant. There was the usual interminable dance beat and strung out sad people desperate to make their weekend benders last a few more hours as they swayed around on the sticky dance floor. By far the weirdest part was the bouncer. I have to laugh, otherwise it would piss me off. When I got there, there was no line, and no bouncer, so I walked up to the booth. Out of the shadows appeared douchebag bouncer guy who literally bodychecked me back onto the street. He then asked for ID, so I provided him my license, which he proceeded to question. I'm 31, and have a real, genuine CA license, but apparently it wasn't good enough for this oaf. It should be said that I look pretty damn identical to the picture too (it's quite a good pic). So now he asks for a second form of ID. I give him my ATM card which has my picture on it (albeit with me wearing glasses and with long hair, very much less like how I look than the DL pic). He's still not convinced, so I start pulling out anything else I can think of. Well, now he's had his fun and played his little powertrip game, so I get the pat down and am able to get in... I wasn't yet done with the fucking retarded door staff though. When the time came to leave I walked out the front door and was just about to step onto the street (i was literally outside at this point) when I was grabbed from behind and told to leave through a different door if I wanted re-entry. "No thanks" I thought, "why would I ever want to come back?" It didn't matter, I was still physically forced to go back inside and leave through the other door. Fucking dickheads.
