Went to Mighty as part of SpaceCowboys' Breakfast of Champions all day electronic festival on New Years Day. Mighty really is the best all encompassing word to describe the venue. When I came in out of the daylight, the "weight" of the atmosphere washed over me like a medium strength wave, not enough to knock you down but certainly enough to make you reevaluate your previous stance. I entered a massive dim cavern filled with the liveliness of a busy bar/music venue and brimming with the sound of hundreds of people rocking out to live electronic dj sets. It was wonderful. I was sober and sleep-deprived and I danced my ass off. I can't wait to go back for another concert and see what else Mighty has to offer.

My pledge class was named Yoshi, so I have a special place in my heart for this name (and dinosaur).  I have to say that the space in SF is truly magnificent.  Very open, modern & chic.  I loved the design, decor and ambiance. Since my gf's thinking about having her wedding reception here next year, we took it upon ourselves to test out a few dishes from the tasting menu.  Here are the plus & minuses: - Madai Sea Bream Carpaccio - This isn't on the tasting menu, but I had to try it when I saw the word "carpaccio."  Simply magnificent.  Surprisingly, the combination of the fish and buffalo mozzarella worked beautifully together.  The crunchy texture from the radish was a nice contrast.  All the flavors were spectacular. This was definitely one of my favorite dishes of the night. - Yari Ika Somen - Unfortunately, NOT one of my favorites.  It reminded me of bland chinese jellyfish. I can see why it's called "squid" noodles b/c it looks like raw squid and has what I perceive to be, the "taste" of raw squid. - Seasonal Organic Vegetable - Grilled veggies, nothing to really write home about.  Maybe the wasabi aioli sauce? - Colorado Free Range Lamb Chops - SUPERB.  I ordered them medium and they were perfect.  Accompanied by grilled buttered cauliflower, I was in heaven.  My only complaint, the portion.  I think there were five small pieces, not including the two chops.  But there was hardly any meat and who wants to gnaw on lamb chops at a restaurant?  The meat wasn't worth gnawing, trust me, I tried to in a very sophisticated way.  :P - Kurobuta Prime Pork Loin & Belly - Mediocre.  Let's face it, we Chinese know how to cook pork.  And maybe that's why I don't like ordering pork from restaurants -  it tends to come out dry.  This dish was good, but I definitely prefer the lamb chops or chicken over this any day. - Rosie's Organic Free Range Herb Half Chicken - Surprisingly, this was one of the best dishes of the night.  We were reluctant to order this b/c who likes ordering chicken at a restaurant?   But we wanted to try as many dishes as possible.  I was so glad we did.  The chicken was moist b/c they gave us a small bowl of teriyaki glaze.  Tres magnifique.  Again, I was in heaven.  Can you really go wrong with rosemary and chicken?  I think not. We tried three of the desserts.  Here are my favorites in descending order: - Chokoretu Keki - Dark chocolate torte with Valrhona chocolate sauce and sweet beet ice cream.  YUM.  We were all pleasantly surprised by the lightness of the chocolate torte.  The sweet beet ice cream was a cool and refreshing compliment to the torte.  I don't have a sweet tooth, but I could live on this anyday. - Warm Cinnamon & Sugar Okinawan Donuts - My gf said it best.  "This tastes like a churro."  It does.  And the freakin' Yamazaki Suntory Whiskey Slurry was NO JOKE.  I dipped my donut in the sauce and could instantly taste the whiskey.  I expected a "hint of it," but not to be overwhelmed by it.  As a result, it sort of ruined the donut for me.  But if you like whiskey, be my guest. - Lemon Edamame Cake - I'm not a big fan of lemon, but the bride to be is and she wanted to try this dessert.  Imagine a dry lemon cake with candied edamame chips and this is your cake.  It didn't rock my world, but maybe it will yours? We also ordered the sake sampler and yours truly was not in good shape.  However,  I managed to get up from my seat to graciously walk towards the restroom w/out falling or tripping over myself.  Believe me, if we were at a club, I would've sat down at the first available table. But since we were at a restaurant and I was right in front of the open kitchen, there was NO WAY I was going to make an ass out of myself with all the lights on.  :( Overall, I have to say that you're paying for the ambiance here.  I think the portions are small, but that's part of the appeal, I guess.  You're paying for an experience here at Yoshi's.  I applaud the chef for his imagination and vision.  I know I will definitely be back.  I can't wait to have the carpaccio, chicken and chocolate torte again.  YUM!

Huge, vast and rich space.  Cozy upper level mezzanine loft-style area and bar.  Large, yet intimate booth-like lounge area... industrial space, unfinished ceilings, burgundy curtains, comfortable lounge seats ... Spent a fun and crazy evening last night at the Hot for Teacher's charity event, it was a blast.  Since it was a special event, most of the wines and beers were complementary, as covered by the charity donation at the door. Stage set situated to allow clear view from most every angle.  Overall a wonderful space and venue nestled in the backstreets of SOMA.
