by Kaella C. on Finally got to experience Middlesex tonight... and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed (to my surprise). We got there at about 9:15 in order to skip the line and skip the cover. (Side note: the website says no cover before 9 on Saturdays but a bouncer didn't really set up outside until about 9:30). The place was dead, so we parked our behinds at a table and talked for a while... a while being an hour and 45 minutes. It was absolutely awesome to be able to watch those who had come in and started dancing (because it was legitimately goon city - I love seeing people have fun but the crowd here was actually laughable). We had come to Middlesex to experience DJ Kon and his "Strictly Butter" lineup. When we had been in line before and decided not to go in, we heard a lot of old school hip-hop jams which is why we decided to come back. However, from 9-11 he played semi-remixed '70s - '80s rock (see: Stevie Nicks). At 11 he finally started playing some better stuff... but it was harder rap that we could hardly dance to and a ton of unknown songs. I don't know about you, but I have even more fun dancing to songs that I can sing along to and know. Unfortunately, that only happened a few times. Then midnight/12:30 rolls around and it's all techno all the time. He even played "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana! I have to admit I enjoyed hearing the song and singing along, but it just wasn't what I was expecting. Also, I don't think his skills were all that good either. He kept mixing the songs so your dancing flow gets all messed up. When the techno came on too, there were awkward pauses in between songs/beats that left everyone still on the dance floor. So the music could have been better, which sucks because they post who is DJing every night right on the website so you can avoid what you don't like. Also, the music was just TOO LOUD for such a small area. Next, the place is just small. However, it wasn't even packed enough for how close we were getting with other people. The majority of the people were just sloppy. I witnessed two times where people dropped their entire drinks on the floor and the glass shattered. It was cute kicking around the glass while trying to dance. It seemed as though most of the people there were hardly even buzzed, but those who had been drinking were gross. Furthermore, the drink situation was kind of sketch. First of all, my two friends and I were not carded at any point upon arriving at the club. Not at the door and not at the bar. I got a Shirley Temple anyway, but that's not the point. When I looked at my receipt, I saw that the drink was only $1.50! I was expecting to pay at LEAST $4 so this was a great surprise. I went back and told my friend, who went up 5 minutes after to get herself one. However, she was charged $3.50! For the same exact drink! She got a different bartender but that shouldn't have mattered. Lastly, there was a giant screen with a projector where really kitschy, old movies were played. This was really distracting and bright. I did not enjoy it, especially when I looked over and saw Santa on the screen. But whatever floats your boat, I guess. One thing I DID like was that they didn't pack us all in like sardines - there was actually room (though people refused to utilize it). Also, the staff was really awesome with keeping up with cleaning the place and getting rid of empty glasses, bottles, etc. Every time I looked over I saw a bucket in the air with empties. It was nice not tripping over cups and stuff. I would definitely go back, but I wouldn't stay as long. We left early as it was, but not being in the mood to dance for two hours was bothersome. OH, and the parking situation was pretty decent because we got there early. We got a spot in front of like 307 Mass Ave. It was awesome.
by Felix Went on Their drinks are O.M.G. good. Large, generous, and plenty of flavor. If you come here you have to try their signature cocktails. I had two of my own and sampled two others. The nouveau carre will kick your butt so if you're trying to get your party started early or end it faster (if you have low tolerance), whichever, that's what you should get it. Their other drinks are sweet and some come with a layer of frothy cream on top. Delicious. The bartenders are friendly, and it does tend to get a bit crowded because the drinks take a while. It's clear why the drinks take longer when you taste them and it's completely worth the wait. Just relax and know what's headed your way when you're waiting there for your drink. The music is upbeat and they play a mix of dance music. Not a lot of people were dancing, but it's not really a place I would go to go dancing anyway. The TV's only had 70's TV shows which bored me, but I heard something about peep shows. I didn't see peep nothing, unless you count seeing Debbie Harry's breast being squashed in a ugly blue ensemble a peep show. Overall, I would love to come for happy hour for their drinks. I would leave so happy.
