Everything about this place is so wrong that it's actually right. I somehow convinced my friends to go here after dinner at La Fonda. I mean, it didn't seem right to be a few blocks away and NOT go here. We walked up to the 'still closed, but up for sale' hotel and lined up to get a picture. Before we knew it, a homeless man jumped into our picture while he was chewing a sandwich. And that's how it all began... As we walked down the stairs, I felt like I was entering the twilight zone. Cover was $3 (it was still early) and as we entered, I was overwhelmed by the smoke. "Ladies" sauntered around the bar- all shapes, sizes and ages. When I was in the bathroom, a 64 year old dancer had a suitcase full of costumes out before deciding on the "vineyard vixen" costume. She is, after all, trying to retire in a couple of years. (That's what she said.) After Blondie crushed a beer can, a guy asked me to crush a beer can. I said, "Do I look like I want to crush a beer can?!" Blondie responded, "It only hurts a little!" But, I knew it was my time to go when the guy's friend yelled, "He said that you're the woman of his dreams!" Like many others before me, my life is now complete.

My birthday was a few Fridays ago and I wanted to make sure that my friends and I had a great time in SF, so I did my research.  I had a party of 20+ with me and wanted to find a club big enough and friendly enough to accommodate all of us.  I emailed around to various North Beach and SOMA clubs, and Karen, the manager from Atmosphere in North Beach, got back to me first with rates about table service, guest list info, etc. Karen was very friendly through email and we had several exchanges.  She even knocked down the price for a $250 bottle of Belvedere to $150.  I decided that this was a steal so 12 from my group signed up for the VIP table service and threw in another bottle of Patron (at regular price).  She also let me know that the rest of my group (the other 10 people) would be "taken care of" and sure enough we were all on the guest list, all got in for free, and were all given wristbands for the VIP tables.  Talk about great service! We were given the best booths in the house for all 22 of us! (Only 12 did the actual drinking from the bottles though).  And just our luck that night they had a special of $5 Belvedere cocktails from 10-11pm, so my non-table service friends were able to enjoy themselves just fine! The DJ was great that night.  They had a special video DJ event going on where they projected music videos onto all the club walls, which created an awesome atmosphere (no pun intended).  The DJ played a great mix of old school hip hop and current top 40 hits.  It was awesome! I think the best part was that it wasn't overcrowded and you could actually move through the dance floor and have enough room to truly break it down!! And, oh did I get down... ;) All my friends were raving about the club the next day.  I've been to my share of clubs around North Beach and few have service as good as Atmosphere's.  The music, the club staff, the drinks were all great and my group left very, very satisfied.  We didn't have to deal with douchey bouncers nor were we packed into the club like sardines.  So contrary to all the 2 star reviews you see below I give Atmosphere a stellar rating.  I highly recommend coming to Atmosphere with a large group and getting in contact with Karen King the next time you go clubbing and want VIP service.  It definitely made for a memorable birthday, that's for sure....Cheers!

So I made it to Aja last night with a couple of girlfriends and I liked it as a dinner night out spot.  Yes, the 'Asian' theme is a little heavy and the top 40 DJ and colored light show creates that pseudo trendy vibe that homogenizes all new ATL hot spots....But on the plus side, the valets were warm and friendly (on a cold night), both our waiters were excellent, and I enjoyed the dim sum and some of our shared entrees. Lamb chops were a great portion and perfectly cooked, but coulda used more seasoning.  The salmon dish was blah and the honey ginger entrees are tasty even if it is a little too typical. I couldn't stop looking around: up at red behind the bar, the calligraphy scrolls on the ceiling, the candles at the buddha altar.  Menu pricing is a little weird; $7 fried rice? and desserts are unappealing.  Maybe I have been in ATL too long and I'm a sucker in the H2S cult, but I already wanna go back for dim sum on Sunday.
