I lived in Japan for two years, and have only been back in the states for about a year.  I had been avoiding Japanese food since I've been back because I figured it couldn't compare, and so many places that claim to be serving Japanese food definitely aren't.  So, I choose the place for my birthday hoping I wouldn't be disappointed. Morimoto lived up to it's hype and I wasn't the least bit disappointed. I started with the ume champagne cocktail.  I am a huge fan of umeshu, but have never had it with champagne.  In Japan it's usually served on the rocks or with shochu as a sour.  It was fantastic with champagne though. Being on a bit of a budget, everyone at my table ordered the $30 chef's sushi combination.  It came with 7 pieces of nigiri and one roll.  They were very accommodating, as I told them what I didn't eat, and they said they wouldn't put those things on there.  The fish was very fresh and as good as some of the best I had in Japan, especially the tuna. I then ordered a cucumber ume shiso roll, as I haven't had shiso since I've been back.  It was pretty good, but if I could get my hands on some shiso, I could definitely make that one at home.  I ordered another cocktail with calpico, yuzu, and gin.  It was really good, but I am a huge fan of calpico and yuzu which was staples for me during my time in Japan, so I wasn't surprised I enjoyed it.  My friends didn't seem as crazy about it, but then again my boyfriend while a fan of calpico, isn't one of yuzu. We ordered the homemade kinako kuromitsu ice cream, which I used to eat almost every week in Japan.  It was good, but a bit strange. In Japan usually the ice cream is kinako and they pour the kuromitzu syrup over it.  This ice cream just had both blended together.  It wasn't bad, but I would have preferred the traditional way as it seems to have a stronger flavor.   We also ordered the kurogoma chocolate mousse cake.  It was delicious, but the chocolate covered up the sesame flavor which was why I ordered it as kurogoma is my favorite Japanese flavor.  It was also crazy tiny. The decor was nice, but I wasn't blown away or anything.  I've seen way better, but then again, I'm judging it against Japanese restaurants in Japan.  The service was okay, but not fantastic.  I really didn't care though because my fish and cocktails were so delicious and it was a nostalgic experience for me.  Really the only downside was the price.   I can really only afford to go there for special occasions, but on my next one I think I'll be going back.  It was totally worth it even though my bill was scary.  If you want a place that uses traditional fresh Japanese ingredients, but puts a new spin on things, this is the definitely the place to go in Philly.  I only know of one places that ties or beats it, and that's in NYC and is just as pricey.

I should have known better when the stupid parking guy kicked us out of MY OWN car because we "had been in there too long." What the hell was his deal? It is seriously non of his business how long we stay in the car! I can't believe I actually paid the $20.00 cover! Totally NOT worth it. NEVER EVER going back. Seriously, this place feels like a ghetto high school's prom. Ugly tacky people come here. Not to mention the DISGUSTING smell. This place reeks!!! I guess I should have known better, this place is in the middle of the ugly side of downtown LA. There were disgusting men undressing girls with their eyes everywhere, how tacky!!!! The place is pretty big, and is normally crowded, well the salsa room. The hip-hop room was outrageously HOT!!!!! I walked in and thought I had walked into a sauna. Also, the bartenders could be pretty slow. Avoid this place. It sucks!!!

I've only been here for the dancing aspect and it was more of a techno kind of thing which is right up my alley.  I actually had a really good time and loved that there was a huge patio outside on the ground level and a smaller patio off the second floor; plenty of areas for you to cool down.  I can't really account for the bar as the entire night I didn't venture because the music kept me on the floor.  I'd definitely go back...it was one of those places that could kick off your night and possibly your morning (I soooo wanted to go to The End Up after...lol).
